South Mountain Vineyard’s location on the shoulder of the Blue Ridge Mountains makes it an exceptional site for our finest wines.

The Blue Ridge Mountains transect the state eighty miles west of our Winery. The vineyards command spectacular views of the town of Burkittsville and surrounding farm country – a landscape that has remained largely unchanged since Civil War armies clashed on these fields in September 1862.

The magic of this beautiful vineyard is best expressed in the wines it produces, which have consistently won top awards and praise from critics.

SMV’s higher elevation and location eighty miles inland make for cooler nights during the growing season.  Rocky well-drained soils of low fertility yield intensely flavored fruit, and the mountainous topography allows for good air drainage, minimizing damage from frosts. The southeast facing slopes act as solar collectors, extending the growing season by four weeks, which allows red varieties to reach optimal ripeness in the fall.
